Today has to be one of the best Father's Day I have ever been involved with. Both kids were basically healthy, Amanda was able to come over and spend time with us before work and David relaxed. I tried a new recipe for breakfast - http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/baked-french-toast-casserole-with-maple-syrup-recipe2/index.html. It was pretty decent - but I would make some changes to the recipe if I were to make it again.
After breakfast Suzie and I headed to Walmart to get some stuff for dinner. While we were there Suzie picked out some clothes for Amanda. When I say that Suzie picked them out - I really mean she picked them out. Each item that I selected she would say "No mommy, Manda wants this one." So hopefully we picked wisely and no one has to return anything. We also picked out some popsicles. SOMEONE decided that the Dora popsicles were the best kind to get. What someone didn't realize , the Dora ones are designed for little kids. They are smaller, the are slow to melt, and they are in fun shapes. A total winner!
When we got back from shopping David was giving Zach a bottle. Sometimes it is the little things that make me happy. It wasn't just that he gave Zach a bottle - he does that all the time - it is just that he is SO into the kids. He let Suzie and Amanda paint his toes today - and never complained. The kids can do basically anything to him and he just adores it. My dad was not into being a dad at all. My parents got divorced when I was pretty young (2nd grade I think) so seeing David being such a great dad is a double blessing to me.
It is fun to see how the kids relate so differently to the two of us. I am the comforter. If they get a booboo or have a bad dream - it is mommy they want. If they want someone to have fun with - it is Fun Daddy alllll the way. I think Suzie also knows how to work him to make him melt. Zach sees him and his little face just lights up. One of Zach's favorite toys is David's favorite Steeler's hat. The kid has great taste!
One of my favorite David Dad stories - Suzie was about 6 months old, no hair and her shunt was still totally visible. She was at daycare and in a swing. Suzie had several changes of clothes at daycare but apparently she had been through all of them so she was wearing a spare outfit from daycare. David went to pick her up - and didn't see her. He finally found the baby with the shunt bump and knew it was Suzie. Cracks me up still. I wonder what would have happened had she not had her shunt. Would he have brought the wrong child home? Ha!
